The Power of Cherries

One of today’s hottest new super fruits is the cherry. The sweet and tart cherry both have important components in keeping us healthy. Michigan State University research has confirmed that the compounds that give tart cherries their bright red shade also relieve the pain of arthritis, gout, and head aches. MSU’s research confirms that tart cherries have an anti-inflammatory property called anthocyanins. Michigan suggests that cherries may help reduce many of the risk factors associated with heart disease by reducing cholesterol, insulin and blood sugar levels. What’s more tart cherries are a rich source of melatonin, a powerful antioxidant that contains potent levels of Vitamin C, E and A.

Sweet cherries also pack a powerful healthy punch. Sweet cherries are considered a good source of potassium, which may help to control blood pressure and reduce the risk for hypertension and stroke. Melatonin is also found in sweet cherries which are effective in treating jet lag and promoting sleep. Sweet cherries have several cancer preventative components including fiber, Vitamin C, carotenoids and anthocyanins.

If you like to eat cherries fresh, frozen, canned or dried, they all are very healthy and delicious. Adding cherries to many different recipes gives your meals additional healthy benefits and vibrant color.

Cherries are a super healthy snack, with only 100 calories in a serving of 21 cherries.
